Daffy Duck Hunt

Mark Mayerson provided me with the draft for this great McKimson short as well.

Manny Gould once again steals the show with his dramatic bit of Daffy telling his story of arctic trauma...

Daffy Kaye

Here's another great Daffy Duck scene, this time from the Bob Clampett short "Book Revue". It was animated by Robert McKimson and Manny Gould (I believe). McKimson's animation is a true highlight (and very ocassionally the only highlight) in many of Clampett's films. Very subtle animation, but completely believeable, and you don't come off with the feeling that nothing is really going on in the scene.

By the way, I had to make this clip from a laserdisc transfer... There was so much smeering from the interlacing issues on the Golden Collection disc you wouldn't believe it.

Hawkins Salesduck

This is another great scene Emery Hawkins did of Daffy Duck, from "The Stupor Salesman" (1948). I love how Daffy searches through his case of supplies, throwing out a bra in the process. There's a really nice effect of it being in slow-motion, even though it really isn't. The look of terror on Daffy's face when he's about to get socked is the kind of thing that separates good animation from great.

Kit for Cat

The knowledgeable Mike Kazaleh broke this Friz Freleng short down.

Of note: Pete Burness is uncredited on this film, though he did more footage than Ken Champin. He was low on the 'totem poll' apparently, along with Emery Hawkins, who were usually the ones most likely not to get screen credit.

It's hard to think one could top Gerry Chiniquy's 'jerky' animation, but Burness seems to beat him in spades at it. Burness' scenes also seem to be the most off-model in the film.

This film seems to be proof that Freleng rarely wanted Sylvester to be seen in a role where he wasn't a villain-type character. Rare was the case that Sylvester wasn't a predator of some kind in Freleng's films (among exceptions, "Stooge for a Mouse" and "Canned Feud" where he is a victim, and of course "A Mouse Divided"). Interesting enough, though, he was used as a heckler in Freleng's "Back Alley Oproar" earlier that year.
