Andy Warhol was there at the opening as well as Maripol, MTV and, of course, Madonna lookalike JeanAnne DiFranco.<div><br /></div><div><div>The Virgin Tour was responsible for generating a new brand of female fan called a Madonna Wannabe. Madonna’s trademark lace attire, rubber bangles, and crucifix earrings became a fashion trademark for Madonna Wannabe’s all over the world. </div><div><br /></div><div>Macy’s department store in New York stocked an array of Madonna-inspired lacy garments, together with rubber bangles and large crucifix earrings. There was a somewhat frenzied copying of Madonna’s style during this period, among young women. Women were dressing like Madonna to attend The Virgin Tour. It seems that the whole world wanted a piece of Madonna.</div><div><br /></div><div>Debbi Voller, in her book <i>Madonna – The Style Book</i>, says “Hundreds of thousands of young girls came to the concert dressed like her, with bleached and tousled hair, see-through tops, bras, fingerless gloves and crucifixes. Magazines and TV shows ran lookalike competitions.”</div><div><br /></div><div>Madonna herself has said, “I never set out to be a role model. I am a strong woman, a successful woman and I don't conform to a stereotype. For so long, women have been told that there are certain ways they mustn't look if they want to get ahead in life. And there I was, dressing in a forbidden way and yet obviously in charge of my life. It was then I realized why were all of them out there in their seats, dressing like me.”</div><div><br /></div><div>Sam Gower, writing in <i>Rolling Stone</i>, said “In the sixties, women burned their bras, now they wear five at a time and bare their belly buttons. Madonna has done for the corset and crucifix what punk did for the safety pin. Macy’s New York department store was flooded with buyers who bought the tour merchandise like the crucifix earrings and fingerless gloves.”<br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcTFjpaGqP7ChAOsrmSR0jSIshCpBdGKzCFqvp3xZ9qHpuLOl08URjr2MebiTQid0I21B3aMXrOXGYlpfW-MRMc2IWQ8VzV_2lS_lhD889v97YUiosh5_40NnAgoWM60QU33Gf_8JLQ7AHXWYJlJ6S1L_RsG6ycgguIKIid0TgNbTGYEiWXAgWV-PgrRs/s976/madonnaland-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; He served in the U.S. Army, and during the Spanish-American War was in the Philippines; he got dysentery, a disease common in the tropics. After Schick recovered (which took a year!), the Army transferred him to Alaska—the opposite of the tropics. There Schick helped lay down a thousand miles of telegraph lines.</div><div><br /></div><div>After retiring from the Army, Schick explored for gold in Alaska and Canada. He hated shaving with water in the bitter cold and tried to invent a better (drier, less cold) way to shave. Born in Mauritius, Marie-Lise Volpeliere-Pierrot cane to England with her family aged 8, and came to prominence as a model a decade later. In an era of fragile blondes, Volpeliere-Pierrot’s blunt features, huge eyes and dark, heavy fringe set her apart from the pack — and though she shortened her surname for work, it was to the no-less Gallic Grès.<div><br></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNeWP77aE8xDtoHPoL1jS2U8oIPHPQMMyYFlwJDmIXwppktpZz9gbXaYlTaG4Plk2nMR0dT6aqLYGgo-8F7IcT_-L-fgLYML1dWALVEbJ7pk-qJ66Gmr3N16yqqXM2yYjZStbwJNidaadbYY6Lc0OLLgLjRWlmBxFtTK7SqRKNX0bGD5kVDRUFPhB7BEW0/s1100/marie-lise-gres.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1100" height="350" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNeWP77aE8xDtoHPoL1jS2U8oIPHPQMMyYFlwJDmIXwppktpZz9gbXaYlTaG4Plk2nMR0dT6aqLYGgo-8F7IcT_-L-fgLYML1dWALVEbJ7pk-qJ66Gmr3N16yqqXM2yYjZStbwJNidaadbYY6Lc0OLLgLjRWlmBxFtTK7SqRKNX0bGD5kVDRUFPhB7BEW0/w640-h350/marie-lise-gres.jpeg" width="640"></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Marie-Lise Grès in the 1960s</td></tr></tbody></table><div><br></div><div>Working with Frank Horvat, Eugene Vernier, Terence Donovan and David Bailey, Grès was lauded as one of the most promising faces of the coming decade. She fulfilled that promise by appearing in some of the era’s most dramatic fashion images — perhaps most notably for William Klein, who shot her outside the Paris Opera in Yves Saint Laurent, the only recognizable figure in a faceless crowd.</div><div><br></div><div>In 1967, Denholm Elliott introduced Grès to Hurt. Within a week they moved in together, marking the start of an enduring affair. Grès gave up modeling, and indulged in her passion for horse riding instead. One January morning, sixteen years later — a day that was ‘cold, wet, nasty altogether,’ Hurt would remember — the couple were out riding near their Oxfordshire home when their horses bolted. Grès was thrown into a ditch, and died.</div><div><br></div><div>A decade later, a journalist asked Ossie Clark which models had first inspired him. As a token of appreciation, it is customary for the bride to light a cigarette for each and every man invited. The bride and the groom are then invited to play some cigarette-smoking games of an unprecedented ingenuousness.<div><br></div><div>These photos come from the <i><a href="https://www.beijingsilvermine.com/">Beijing Silvermine</a></i> project, an archive of half a million negatives salvaged over the years from a recycling plant on the edge of Beijing by the French collector and artist Thomas Sauvin.</div><div><br></div><div>Sauvin has been collecting photographs taken by ordinary Chinese since 2009, when he discovered a garbage dump on the outskirts of Beijing that housed bulks of discarded 35mm. negatives, ready to be processed to extract silver nitrate. The United States was the world’s strongest military power. Its economy was booming, and the fruits of this prosperity–new cars, suburban houses and other consumer goods–were available to more people than ever before.</div><div><br></div><div>However, the 1950s were also an era of great conflict. For example, the nascent civil rights movement and the crusade against communism at home and abroad in the Korean War exposed underlying divisions in American society.</div><div><br></div><div>These wonderful photos were found by <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/thomashawk/">Thomas Hawk</a> that show what life in the U.S. looked like in the 1950s.</div><div><br></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; Horses, carriages, pedestrians, street cars, bicycles, and automobiles all competed for limited space along the city’s grand boulevard. Collisions were commonplace, especially as cars began to rule the road, and for the high-end department stores that dotted the thoroughfare, bad traffic meant bad business.</div><div><br></div><div>It was thanks to a generous gift from millionaire physician and New York commissioner of traffic, Dr. John A. Harriss, that the city’s traffic problem finally got a reprieve. His 1920 design for a simple, two-light signal, which consisted of a wooden shed housing light bulbs and supported by a steel base frame, was nothing to look at, but it quickly helped to solve the problem of endless gridlock.</div><div><br></div><div><div>Dr. John A. Harriss, in charge of traffic, had originally introduced traffic towers along Fifth Avenue on February 16, 1920. Harriss paid for the traffic towers’ construction and maintenance out of his own pocket. These first traffic towers were sheds, housed twelve feet off the ground in the center of the intersections, manned by a traffic officer who controlled hand-operated green, yellow and red signals. The other traffic officers stationed along Fifth Avenue would take their cues from these signals in regards to the flow of traffic.</div><div><br></div><div>On May 16, 1921 the New York City Board of Estimate approved five new traffic towers to replace these original towers along Fifth Avenue at 34th, 38th, 42nd, 50th and 57th Streets. Two more towers were eventually added to the plan and placed at 14th and 26th Streets, making a total of seven towers running up and down Fifth Avenue. The towers would be a gift from The Fifth Avenue Association, but would then be maintained by the city. They were designed by Joseph H. Freedlander and cast by John A. Polachek Bronze and Iron Co. of Long Island City. Each tower was about 24 feet tall, weighed five tons and was built of solid cast bronze on a heavy steel frame.</div><div><br></div><div>The towers had electronically synchronized clocks on their north and south faces and 350 pound bronze bells which would toll the hours. The first new tower was put into service at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street on December 14, 1922 at 2 pm amid much fanfare. The rest of the towers were opened in the following days.</div><div><br></div><div>On April 27, 1925 the new city law went into effect, and amber or yellow lights were eliminated to signal that northbound and southbound traffic had the right to proceed. From that day on, red would forever mean “stop” and only green would indicate “go.”</div></div></div><div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSORzZPml-1wKCSo1nxZmByKc7E3WqSLHsbkLYzf1eWGl1HJLIynsyMeloF2BYm97bC9G8jrj7i1ksRq9hqQ2Dr0gjbnTOrb5pWO7rp3Puszm66T-k2e-E-zqrru0zbGReprHAnrVwJTd6ipmeOo5xB0Fv4jXVAJy1rphBzd8y8CUiXj8ubx0Mk-8psU8/s781/new-york-traffic-signal-tower-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="781" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSORzZPml-1wKCSo1nxZmByKc7E3WqSLHsbkLYzf1eWGl1HJLIynsyMeloF2BYm97bC9G8jrj7i1ksRq9hqQ2Dr0gjbnTOrb5pWO7rp3Puszm66T-k2e-E-zqrru0zbGReprHAnrVwJTd6ipmeOo5xB0Fv4jXVAJy1rphBzd8y8CUiXj8ubx0Mk-8psU8/s16000/new-york-traffic-signal-tower-1.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0zqdfxH4wgxioAiUPy-LxG4wIg-X69KmBVHGWdFu0g9dMNOfjFxRzcb83MbK472Su3uATzsTta90ECcqq36osNIt9qjfFwMdyZztQ3Zbcbv-NJbe4w4RojDzymwjWJAyzT_vnobU-EzLWXpV-tYMzgkFSrBrnk47oj3zDtJOw0t9LDxSUAAeOR-TVKDw/s806/new-york-traffic-signal-tower-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="806" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0zqdfxH4wgxioAiUPy-LxG4wIg-X69KmBVHGWdFu0g9dMNOfjFxRzcb83MbK472Su3uATzsTta90ECcqq36osNIt9qjfFwMdyZztQ3Zbcbv-NJbe4w4RojDzymwjWJAyzT_vnobU-EzLWXpV-tYMzgkFSrBrnk47oj3zDtJOw0t9LDxSUAAeOR-TVKDw/s16000/new-york-traffic-signal-tower-2.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrA5V3xV3ysol9rWi6tw6ZvEu6UnMp_81wFop-nXPla72YQD47bqHdSex8exp0R1aDRhgMyw10rf2uO9-z40GqaTCrs-_uwFzMw9ENEMbQVQiRPn19PuKXAqL3jx7NqfK05-Smi7NF1fV1pAcaCVPbKEzsphEtggYa_BMvxEiB58lmuplqYnLOfuph9wg/s798/new-york-traffic-signal-tower-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="798" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrA5V3xV3ysol9rWi6tw6ZvEu6UnMp_81wFop-nXPla72YQD47bqHdSex8exp0R1aDRhgMyw10rf2uO9-z40GqaTCrs-_uwFzMw9ENEMbQVQiRPn19PuKXAqL3jx7NqfK05-Smi7NF1fV1pAcaCVPbKEzsphEtggYa_BMvxEiB58lmuplqYnLOfuph9wg/s16000/new-york-traffic-signal-tower-3.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmdxQReX-fnQujPm_6PD_Cn9zh1w9ZLQDg3TSQRYkiEk2_NOga1mrqijQyFF-CvVd-HSbuM7pJhqdORI94Z94nSdN0wODqYsRcxFpMByo4StWFL0dQq_CuRzE4tIK6AtH43aGpBiR6aVbwovL9Yo-hA0WlERkmHBP9xDDtXOaQup4rOS8gGlIx7AyYisU/s830/new-york-traffic-signal-tower-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="830" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmdxQReX-fnQujPm_6PD_Cn9zh1w9ZLQDg3TSQRYkiEk2_NOga1mrqijQyFF-CvVd-HSbuM7pJhqdORI94Z94nSdN0wODqYsRcxFpMByo4StWFL0dQq_CuRzE4tIK6AtH43aGpBiR6aVbwovL9Yo-hA0WlERkmHBP9xDDtXOaQup4rOS8gGlIx7AyYisU/s16000/new-york-traffic-signal-tower-4.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTkZZN4M3UM9evR9MoDlETNJlvE34UURy_3yVumIO0veV6WgaTBAksbsaXe_q6gsm3udOY1IDwjRqNFa2ARgzeALb1MW8kXDeyoJgYJUTJStdz17MLGylOKcWhGGkhy31K86GUyAdPyP9sOVcwR58AedSVqhXc5XxMkh2O0ti_MoNAhmZ9N_JruD4HfgY/s969/new-york-traffic-signal-tower-5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="969" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTkZZN4M3UM9evR9MoDlETNJlvE34UURy_3yVumIO0veV6WgaTBAksbsaXe_q6gsm3udOY1IDwjRqNFa2ARgzeALb1MW8kXDeyoJgYJUTJStdz17MLGylOKcWhGGkhy31K86GUyAdPyP9sOVcwR58AedSVqhXc5XxMkh2O0ti_MoNAhmZ9N_JruD4HfgY/s16000/new-york-traffic-signal-tower-5.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span></span></div><a href="http://www.vintag.es/2024/03/nyc-traffic-signal-towers.html#more">See more »</a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6424637093648521725.post-30342730285840533912024-03-17T19:17:00.001+07:002024-03-17T19:17:10.912+07:00HOW TO STOP MOUTH BREATHING! He then became interested in photography and began to experiment with the new medium, initially becoming known for his portraits of notable French people.<div><br></div><div>By 1851, Ferrier had settled in Paris and in that year he exhibited at the Great Exhibition in London. His work so impressed the organizers that, together with the English photographer, Hugh Owen, he was asked to make photographs of the exhibits.</div><div><br></div><div>In 1855, Ferrier exhibited at the <i>Exposition Universelle</i> of Paris, where he was awarded a silver medal. He is credited with creating the first glass stereoviews for the Brewster stereoscope in 1852. These became very popular and in 1857 he produced several series of stereoviews of France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Greece and Turkey.</div><div><br></div><div>In 1859 Ferrier went into partnership with his son and with another stereo photographer, Charles Soulier, with the business being sold in 1863 to Léon & Lévy, a company that specialized in stereoscopic views and picture postcards. She was married to George Harrison and then to Eric Clapton. The three most well-known songs were “Something” (The Beatles), “Layla” (Eric Clapton) and “Wonderful Tonight.”<div><br></div><div>She worked in London, New York, and Paris, side by side with the world’s top models. Boyd appeared in the UK and Italian editions of <i>Vogue</i> magazine, as well as in several commercials. George Harrison met Pattie while filming <i>A Hard Day’s Night</i> in 1964 and they married in 1966. George and Patti were a hip couple in 1960’s Swinging London.</div><div><br></div><div><div>By the early seventies, George and Pattie were having problems and it didn’t help that Eric Clapton was pursuing Pattie and that is when “Layla” was written.</div><div><br></div><div>In 1974 Pattie ran off with Eric with George’s blessings. George and Eric remained friends and would visit and work with each other in the future. A quote from Pattie “The first Christmas after I’d left him, in 1974, just as Eric and I were sitting down to lunch, George burst in, uninvited,” Boyd says in her autobiography. “He had some wine and Christmas pudding with us. I couldn’t believe how friendly he and Eric were towards each other.” Pattie and George’s divorce was final in 1977 and George married Olivia Trinidad Arias. They would stay married until George’s death. George stayed friends with Pattie till the end.</div><div><br></div><div>Pattie would say that being married during the Beatles years was not an easy thing. If she went to the concerts she and the other wives and girlfriends would sometimes be chased, kicked, and pushed by jealous fans. She said: “In my first experience, I found it absolutely terrifying. I got to see the Beatles play at a theater in London, and George told me that I should leave with my friends before the last number. So before the last song, we got up from our seats and walked toward the nearest exit door, and there were these girls behind me. They followed us out, and they were kicking me and pulling my hair and pushing us all the way down this long passageway.”</div><div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7dfcBKvwssUC3UR_He0-Od8Z4wSj2UCy7s-C6_xE6MREjdwBrJVAL-QDSn5bvFz8CICxtZZlyzqdoa5TF_B0-4Oh1P2ccYtOITXJAmYwPk0TQzPOQ593kYQYxx_uet4B8ECzOfuza1eJ7ufHHwfMu2AaEVtxkyHUEOHkrG7N2jgmQ6-YmZ7IwRZucw6M/s960/pattie-boyd-portrait-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7dfcBKvwssUC3UR_He0-Od8Z4wSj2UCy7s-C6_xE6MREjdwBrJVAL-QDSn5bvFz8CICxtZZlyzqdoa5TF_B0-4Oh1P2ccYtOITXJAmYwPk0TQzPOQ593kYQYxx_uet4B8ECzOfuza1eJ7ufHHwfMu2AaEVtxkyHUEOHkrG7N2jgmQ6-YmZ7IwRZucw6M/s16000/pattie-boyd-portrait-1.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAeRM8DJ86RrFwVw007giNQyjbaJaWiLNgEDgHCmkcwhGEvrtPY9yNXCihyphenhyphenypwUXH96lqhGHi08U_MVKlmsdyDoj0ALgoj81i2G0nYMi2UQkV0wAmo5eifo8yjTdYfTzGK04UrRkdHibzC_jwO0RNPiBnFu7t3FgtH3var5f8Kw9RK_EK-L9VVa6SNG2A/s872/pattie-boyd-portrait-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="872" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAeRM8DJ86RrFwVw007giNQyjbaJaWiLNgEDgHCmkcwhGEvrtPY9yNXCihyphenhyphenypwUXH96lqhGHi08U_MVKlmsdyDoj0ALgoj81i2G0nYMi2UQkV0wAmo5eifo8yjTdYfTzGK04UrRkdHibzC_jwO0RNPiBnFu7t3FgtH3var5f8Kw9RK_EK-L9VVa6SNG2A/s16000/pattie-boyd-portrait-2.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEay2ZgpGknG8MdmFAx4OoP7rSwFOp3YsR6EjP5eoeSQ6Ih0D0ctAOkQi1fHePgmWWy9QPu6tiwhy5mRHBYjhRzzmdz4czuCcSaRal7WFnWnxUurBndyo806mj3FqCEPxNEkj5ujgiJi05oY4xkUL4iPAEtZu1770evcWCeBrlpicr2Il0io7z7N8lDFg/s970/pattie-boyd-portrait-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="970" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEay2ZgpGknG8MdmFAx4OoP7rSwFOp3YsR6EjP5eoeSQ6Ih0D0ctAOkQi1fHePgmWWy9QPu6tiwhy5mRHBYjhRzzmdz4czuCcSaRal7WFnWnxUurBndyo806mj3FqCEPxNEkj5ujgiJi05oY4xkUL4iPAEtZu1770evcWCeBrlpicr2Il0io7z7N8lDFg/s16000/pattie-boyd-portrait-3.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE0it4SMBkU5UictoxN5QZ4cq1J1AH7D22f9pSl07Wa4kIcVEAUZCazusdgU14WxA48FyI4pdkyEOX_ZnF6yl8RI9GMWKwltaQL5RcEeqY8SCsMTmou5qK6DWfJW8qnFkjd4pfC2-V-jCcocGK-wZZGd-a_5ccOdOxYq9BL4-RDMd4NeauEXgUbK3mBFY/s941/pattie-boyd-portrait-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="941" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE0it4SMBkU5UictoxN5QZ4cq1J1AH7D22f9pSl07Wa4kIcVEAUZCazusdgU14WxA48FyI4pdkyEOX_ZnF6yl8RI9GMWKwltaQL5RcEeqY8SCsMTmou5qK6DWfJW8qnFkjd4pfC2-V-jCcocGK-wZZGd-a_5ccOdOxYq9BL4-RDMd4NeauEXgUbK3mBFY/s16000/pattie-boyd-portrait-4.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGVzbBLraYcd4mdAaZCHM47sZgLiEMpZsotp5QQmkOI7O7DXRoSd34rTP_7D-wdEpbDR7tOMejcKXXqLQx8vm_iCE48WsoNu6K6NwcFbc1GYHhGVzcca7wP5aD94VSoQmzb8MyRxf5reRBog8Hl4Axd6VvhT4sSvVP5YkjvOqYozqQ-tKkC6QmLsI5_I8/s817/pattie-boyd-portrait-5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="817" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGVzbBLraYcd4mdAaZCHM47sZgLiEMpZsotp5QQmkOI7O7DXRoSd34rTP_7D-wdEpbDR7tOMejcKXXqLQx8vm_iCE48WsoNu6K6NwcFbc1GYHhGVzcca7wP5aD94VSoQmzb8MyRxf5reRBog8Hl4Axd6VvhT4sSvVP5YkjvOqYozqQ-tKkC6QmLsI5_I8/s16000/pattie-boyd-portrait-5.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span></span></div></div><a href="http://www.vintag.es/2024/03/pattie-boyd-portraits.html#more">See more »</a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6424637093648521725.post-86022835626337558882024-03-17T07:29:00.000+07:002024-03-17T07:29:56.720+07:00Amazing Photos of the 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air BeauvilleIn 1955, Chevrolet underwent a comprehensive overhaul of its full-size lineup, resulting in a completely new car. Signifying a significant departure, a V-8 engine became available for the first time since 1918. Enhancements to visibility allowed drivers to fully observe all four fenders, with the introduction of the Sweep-Sight windshield, providing panoramic views.<div><br></div><div>Additionally, the Glide-Ride front suspension improved road holding, complemented by Anti-Dive braking control and a revolutionary 12-volt electrical system, propelling the newly minted 1955 Chevrolet to the forefront of the entry-level segment.</div><div><br></div><div>The Bel Air, as the flagship model, made a return, notably in station wagon form, where its luxurious appeal could be complemented with the Beauville package. Offering enhanced utility paired with upscale amenities, the Bel Air Beauville stood as a unique vehicle, capable of serving work needs during the week while exuding respectability for family outings on Sundays, as highlighted in period advertisements.</div><div><br></div><div>Moreover, the Bel Air Beauville could be customized to the customer’s preferences, ranging from lavish to minimalist, akin to the spirit of the midlevel 210 series. Despite its distinctive features, the Beauville variant of the Bel Air saw limited sales, rendering it relatively rare. Moreover, due to its utilitarian usage, many Beauvilles succumbed to the demands of labor, further amplifying their scarcity.</div><div><br></div><div>Chevrolet ceased production of the package in 1957, with its revival occurring only in the 1970s when it was adapted to the full-size van line. Here below is a set of amazing photos of the 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Beauville.

The talented mother-daughter duo grew up together: Garland was 23 when she gave birth to Minnelli, who would later say she was her mom’s best friend.<div><br></div><div>Garland gave birth to Liza May Minnelli on March 12, 1946. Garland and her second husband, Vincente Minnelli, had married the year before, on June 15, 1945 — just one year after her first marriage to David Rose ended. Though it was not reported at the time, Garland was hospitalized for a month following her daughter’s birth. She had surgery to correct an issue from her cesarean section; she is also believed to have had postpartum depression.</div><div><br></div><div><div>Despite what many believe, particularly due to Garland’s substance use, Minnelli said she had a happy childhood with her mother and her younger siblings, Lorna and Joey Luft, whom Garland welcomed with her third husband, Sidney Luft.</div><div><br></div><div>“One of the biggest misconceptions about my mama is that she didn’t provide me with a happy childhood,” Minnelli told <i><a href="https://en.vogue.me/entertainment/interview-liza-minnelli-judy-garland-wizard-of-oz/">Vogue</a></i>. “There were highs and lows for sure, but I can say I was very happy. If people choose to believe that or not, it’s up to them, but I know I was happy.”</div><div><br></div><div><div>Garland was always supportive of Minnelli entering the industry, and the two became especially close as Minnelli grew up. “My fondest memory of my mama was the conversations we had. As I became a teenager, I became her best friend and confidante. We would laugh and talk for hours. Sometimes in person, sometimes on the phone, depending where we were.”</div><div><br></div><div>Minnelli was 23 years old when her mother died in 1969. Garland, at just 47, was found in her home, and her death was attributed to an accidental overdose.</div><div><br></div><div>In 1972, Minnelli recalled being the “calm center in the vortex” after her mother’s death. “When she died, I almost knew why,” she told <i><a href="https://content.time.com/time/subscriber/article/0,33009,905866-6,00.html">TIME</a></i>. “She let her guard down. She didn’t die from an overdose. I think she just got tired. She lived like a taut wire. I don’t think she ever looked for real happiness, because she always thought happiness would mean the end.”</div></div><div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheu9w7HFUEqFIuY7-wKS6g1zDlSEAAI7UVnvU67JDnpr6Fv2S21mRFuRrxHsjdM1XO3UAAe05mEbmv40VedQSrqe5GuNaNF4ZSLZwMgxLUQMnUkizZ6z77-8Mhagu4uHnC511l0MS3CHOebR7lQMEdLoEFgetlnyBKA4CxWak1FWC1AeXshsP68zGEEpY/s1200/liza-minnelli-judy-garland-1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="616" data-original-width="1200" height="328" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheu9w7HFUEqFIuY7-wKS6g1zDlSEAAI7UVnvU67JDnpr6Fv2S21mRFuRrxHsjdM1XO3UAAe05mEbmv40VedQSrqe5GuNaNF4ZSLZwMgxLUQMnUkizZ6z77-8Mhagu4uHnC511l0MS3CHOebR7lQMEdLoEFgetlnyBKA4CxWak1FWC1AeXshsP68zGEEpY/w640-h328/liza-minnelli-judy-garland-1.jpg" width="640"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh70vu9jNkqyCXDLnpkxQosKIBL_GDHF9H8tcj7PeY9VJoEylgWp-WpPJ_pfMZiSD7mQfBsjao3IlEG9NQrcbfk-Uwm0LCqGO5fvsqvPjDnKFE9dd_pjVAU2gP5Elmr9p5uZ5gSN85zGr54czrx2FiEALtsVzqzTA65xvevcPZ8X62iK3ahewppbpuZRew/s835/liza-minnelli-judy-garland-2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="835" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh70vu9jNkqyCXDLnpkxQosKIBL_GDHF9H8tcj7PeY9VJoEylgWp-WpPJ_pfMZiSD7mQfBsjao3IlEG9NQrcbfk-Uwm0LCqGO5fvsqvPjDnKFE9dd_pjVAU2gP5Elmr9p5uZ5gSN85zGr54czrx2FiEALtsVzqzTA65xvevcPZ8X62iK3ahewppbpuZRew/s16000/liza-minnelli-judy-garland-2.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqoXPHMzB-b8SKi1-gYhZkw2pkVMKgiOdZ535I8umIOItbFEiOLaiTBlLuhISSwVtwuqf-TWI8hbBkQPdyYODMXx1ixot8gNidV0RLp8vxni9S5mCf3onGvdIbbWUbmxfU5zSpOYkrRY-ibnEriChCVD2J7MKW7DFNqNIsB66F589zV4rRmcTRgUc19vk/s951/liza-minnelli-judy-garland-3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="951" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqoXPHMzB-b8SKi1-gYhZkw2pkVMKgiOdZ535I8umIOItbFEiOLaiTBlLuhISSwVtwuqf-TWI8hbBkQPdyYODMXx1ixot8gNidV0RLp8vxni9S5mCf3onGvdIbbWUbmxfU5zSpOYkrRY-ibnEriChCVD2J7MKW7DFNqNIsB66F589zV4rRmcTRgUc19vk/s16000/liza-minnelli-judy-garland-3.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRwSJSCL7Qsw2SNTl-GtVV3CXccGVfKADINMKsBfZCoqcDwbSszuq8uUl1Y884mgw7560MgdlMxcTfX4FYGkJDEqCpTXoB-R-MidgVdaWTSjPL_J6a-pSgsn8a1z6BbVPnEx6hGIRtAgaa_0_Jms0x_haX5aPb9WUg1SC1b_aEMbIxlo36TB2vMBJ-O8U/s787/liza-minnelli-judy-garland-4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="787" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRwSJSCL7Qsw2SNTl-GtVV3CXccGVfKADINMKsBfZCoqcDwbSszuq8uUl1Y884mgw7560MgdlMxcTfX4FYGkJDEqCpTXoB-R-MidgVdaWTSjPL_J6a-pSgsn8a1z6BbVPnEx6hGIRtAgaa_0_Jms0x_haX5aPb9WUg1SC1b_aEMbIxlo36TB2vMBJ-O8U/s16000/liza-minnelli-judy-garland-4.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9RZscxdl83LmQkhA0p-QdFErO0x0YXeNZN_fdWZAxFTEQVpqhLpqauziXvTfjeRUf3DPfvDXwl7tYRbb7BuNtE6gJwOKMMJ4UPsljfOTnrB2YzXs26KAIbo4GBmCv6QPTsjcef2F7TCvEFINoP8uwYJ6jupH6ndnQ_PftQ2Ffx9kh2aNRit4MH4xp3Do/s828/liza-minnelli-judy-garland-5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="828" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9RZscxdl83LmQkhA0p-QdFErO0x0YXeNZN_fdWZAxFTEQVpqhLpqauziXvTfjeRUf3DPfvDXwl7tYRbb7BuNtE6gJwOKMMJ4UPsljfOTnrB2YzXs26KAIbo4GBmCv6QPTsjcef2F7TCvEFINoP8uwYJ6jupH6ndnQ_PftQ2Ffx9kh2aNRit4MH4xp3Do/s16000/liza-minnelli-judy-garland-5.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span></span></div></div><a href="http://www.vintag.es/2024/03/judy-and-liza.html#more">See more »</a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6424637093648521725.post-65329691005219577482024-03-16T18:41:00.001+07:002024-03-16T18:41:08.426+07:00March 16, 1971: The Carpenters Won Big at Their First Grammy Awards! On the night of March 16, 1971, a 21-year-old Karen Carpenter and a 24-year-old Richard Carpenter headed to the 16th annual Grammy Awards being held at the Hollywood Palace, Los Angeles, California. The sections with diagonal planks forming a chevron pattern were meant for foot traffic, whereas the two strips of straight planks were meant for rolling chairs. When the boardwalk opened in 1923, rolling chairs were already a popular attraction in Atlantic City, and they remained in Coney Island into the 1960s.<div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi014_Pqfi3oJO3tDAGcgm9-9q0fDpYBmyXbJa2U3j7e8gcof35-a7fuMb3V19DYOqXkxR5ajXw6XmfelZ4YtvbnbZdc7efkj8ZZ9BS1rFFc97fWH-tTRTfVJCSxss9PAPO7gO0CZiAJxH1imm3W97Vok-5z5wdk5Dap947yZIhEHjkc2XFb-JOKT_Im0o/s1000/coney-island-boardwalk-1.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="612" data-original-width="1000" height="392" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi014_Pqfi3oJO3tDAGcgm9-9q0fDpYBmyXbJa2U3j7e8gcof35-a7fuMb3V19DYOqXkxR5ajXw6XmfelZ4YtvbnbZdc7efkj8ZZ9BS1rFFc97fWH-tTRTfVJCSxss9PAPO7gO0CZiAJxH1imm3W97Vok-5z5wdk5Dap947yZIhEHjkc2XFb-JOKT_Im0o/w640-h392/coney-island-boardwalk-1.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilmhdo4cPe1EuU15czx-4oMBW9lp0qrmszdppIN4T8cv0jQIsuQL_KG5iz8XZzl9xZ1Q_25xfS90nzBatCnDJbmDQR6h4NSvb8uWy5mnHpuD3IYoW2jXTkY2iu6eWvcuxOP_APQ6gmV6aSfziq7geccmvsydNIqN0RhqtN91e9LGWycouotDF880FinTI/s1000/coney-island-boardwalk-2.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="647" data-original-width="1000" height="414" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilmhdo4cPe1EuU15czx-4oMBW9lp0qrmszdppIN4T8cv0jQIsuQL_KG5iz8XZzl9xZ1Q_25xfS90nzBatCnDJbmDQR6h4NSvb8uWy5mnHpuD3IYoW2jXTkY2iu6eWvcuxOP_APQ6gmV6aSfziq7geccmvsydNIqN0RhqtN91e9LGWycouotDF880FinTI/w640-h414/coney-island-boardwalk-2.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN1YL5K3U5hPQsAISkMn77_MQZkW1wkldSDG78i1fe8wglqwaGHrMPN-h-uV8scV95NogKrB5i4PFcCjQFr7xvdhRhQfWButTWLZJVd18CmpE2cvyJSedJzBnrsgu7M2KaKpMw6SCcHNp3MPUyLVkEEJL-j5foRNkB5M1M0jZaHlPbC7Ep-q35mjRzrL8/s1000/coney-island-boardwalk-3.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="636" data-original-width="1000" height="408" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN1YL5K3U5hPQsAISkMn77_MQZkW1wkldSDG78i1fe8wglqwaGHrMPN-h-uV8scV95NogKrB5i4PFcCjQFr7xvdhRhQfWButTWLZJVd18CmpE2cvyJSedJzBnrsgu7M2KaKpMw6SCcHNp3MPUyLVkEEJL-j5foRNkB5M1M0jZaHlPbC7Ep-q35mjRzrL8/w640-h408/coney-island-boardwalk-3.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPCvv1yDUuxd3DGreP6g-MQ0Dq-yLIlJmIse4m11brE_yJqFK8sdxLRWvHO_Ub5ZuiipZhOUCMTS8EKEgVKGxicKl_D_APOWUfDaN3AZgEBlDJ7a3FXSd5FhRKdRJKKbw59K-cIxfx5WduIsYLQwWOOlJernfzvnzyPI6PE2n4ka2ZdnlXda_MVkfOsSo/s1000/coney-island-boardwalk-4.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="634" data-original-width="1000" height="406" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPCvv1yDUuxd3DGreP6g-MQ0Dq-yLIlJmIse4m11brE_yJqFK8sdxLRWvHO_Ub5ZuiipZhOUCMTS8EKEgVKGxicKl_D_APOWUfDaN3AZgEBlDJ7a3FXSd5FhRKdRJKKbw59K-cIxfx5WduIsYLQwWOOlJernfzvnzyPI6PE2n4ka2ZdnlXda_MVkfOsSo/w640-h406/coney-island-boardwalk-4.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGZGcY9lI7QAI3GwVABP_1iXdC2KwDJ82Vtn_2ivrrr2V-yuutvqZtj3r31419X45thPDxj4AKTuizxoB8G5xEioAK3U0-1rSXBEfavJ6jb-PVtnOnvwdQGxCpfXspKjOZ4WXZ3MkTX-ZqdHibE9l1pCX_TTU-B9O9WrsxktdseHpgWAbGv3Dn9BcxNBA/s1000/coney-island-boardwalk-5.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="634" data-original-width="1000" height="406" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGZGcY9lI7QAI3GwVABP_1iXdC2KwDJ82Vtn_2ivrrr2V-yuutvqZtj3r31419X45thPDxj4AKTuizxoB8G5xEioAK3U0-1rSXBEfavJ6jb-PVtnOnvwdQGxCpfXspKjOZ4WXZ3MkTX-ZqdHibE9l1pCX_TTU-B9O9WrsxktdseHpgWAbGv3Dn9BcxNBA/w640-h406/coney-island-boardwalk-5.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div><div>In April 1923, shortly before the boardwalk was completed, it was named after Edward J. Riegelmann, the Brooklyn borough president. Riegelmann, one of the project’s main leaders, had boasted that the boardwalk would raise real estate values on Coney Island. Despite his role in the boardwalk’s development, Riegelmann and his assistant commissioner of public works opposed the name, preferring that the project be known as the “Coney Island Boardwalk.” Riegelmann stated that, when the boardwalk was completed, “poor people will no longer have to stand with their faces pressed against wire fences looking at the ocean.”</div><div><br /></div><div>The boardwalk was opened in three phases between Ocean Parkway and West 37th Street. The first section of the boardwalk, comprising the eastern section between Ocean Parkway and West 5th Street, opened in October 1922. The boardwalk was extended westward to West 17th Street in December 1922. The final section of the boardwalk, from West 17th to West 37th Street, was officially opened with a ceremony on May 15, 1923. At the time of its opening, the boardwalk was said to be wider and more expensive than the comparable boardwalks at Atlantic City, the Rockaways, and Long Beach on Long Island.</div><div><br /></div><div>After the boardwalk was completed, Charles L. Craig, the New York City Comptroller, said that it could not be considered a “real boardwalk” without pergolas and restrooms. Accordingly, in June 1924, the New York City Board of Estimate approved the erection of five comfort stations and five beachfront pavilions. The pavilions were completed by early 1925. The Board of Estimate, in December 1922, approved another project to widen, create, or open private streets that led to the boardwalk. The work, which began in 1923, entailed condemning 288 lots, including 175 houses and portions of Steeplechase Park. Eighteen streets, each 60 feet (18 m) wide, were created between West 8th and West 35th Streets. Surf and Stillwell Avenues were widened, and the city took over several private passageways, including West 12th Street. Sewers and sidewalks were installed. Brooklyn public officials believed these changes would revitalize Coney Island's shore and lessen congestion on Surf Avenue. In total, the boardwalk and related improvement projects cost $20 million (about $342 million in today). Of this cost, 35 percent was paid through taxes, and the remainder was paid by the city.</div><div><br /></div><div>The Brighton Beach extension of the boardwalk, which would build out the boardwalk from Ocean Parkway eastward to Coney Island Avenue, was formally approved by the city’s Board of Estimate in June 1925. The extension was 3,000 to 4,000 feet (910 to 1,220 m) long, and entailed expanding the beach and creating new paths to the boardwalk. Real estate developments were proposed as a result of the extension, which was completed by mid-1926. The $1 million extension was to be funded via taxes levied on Coney Island property owners. Although some property owners objected to the assessments, they were ultimately forced to pay for the project.</div><div><br /></div><div>A similar scheme to extend the boardwalk 3,000 feet (910 m) westward, from West 37th Street to Coney Island Light, was opposed by the residents of Sea Gate, the private community through which the boardwalk would have been expanded. In June 1927, borough president James J. Byrne approved the Sea Gate extension and bought land on the Sea Gate waterfront. The following year, the bulkhead lines in Sea Gate were approved for demolition, in anticipation of the boardwalk being extended. The boardwalk extension was slated to connect to a steamship pier operated by the Coney Island Steamship Corporation. However, the company was permanently enjoined from selling stocks and bonds in July 1930. The corporation claimed that the Brooklyn government had allocated $3 million to extend the boardwalk in December 1929, but borough president Henry Hesterberg denied having done so. The boardwalk was ultimately not extended past the fence on West 37th Street. After a four-block section of the boardwalk was damaged in a July 1932 fire, it was rebuilt and reopened within a month.</div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6424637093648521725.post-63309237709137373442024-03-15T18:29:00.002+07:002024-03-16T13:34:20.370+07:00Photos of Aerialist and Strongwoman Luisita Leers From the 1920s and 1930sLuisita Leers (1909–1997) was a prominent aerialist during the 1920s and 1930s, who predominantly worked under the Barnum and Bailey Circus, performing at high profile venues such as New York’s Roxy Theatre and Paris’s Cirque Medrano.<div><br></div><div><div>Luisita was born Martha Luise Krökel in Wiesbaden, in the western state of Hesse in Germany, on October 14, 1909. Her mother, Gertrude, was a member of the Reichenbach circus family. A physically powerful woman, Gertrude acquired fame with an elegant and spectacular acrobatic act, Les Leandros, in which she was the under-stander—an unusual occurrence for a woman. Luisita never knew her biological father, who left Gertrude when Luisita was only two years old. Her mother eventually remarried with Guido Krökel, an aerial contortionist who worked with the Leers-Arvello Troupe; their act, which combined Roman Rings and acrobatic pyramids, was mostly an aerial display of strength.</div><div><br></div><div>Guido took care of Luisita’s artistic education without much tenderness, and transformed her into an exceptionally strong female athlete, who was able to hold her own in the Leers-Arvellos’s various exhibitions of strength. Luisita made her professional debut on March 8, 1920 in Cologne (Köln), working with the troupe on the Roman rings. She was eleven years old! Soon, she could perform a one-arm “plange” (or <i>planche</i>) and an “iron cross,” which were then supposed to belong exclusively to a male repertoire, and she even held with one arm her hanging stepfather. Meanwhile, she was building a trapeze act of her own, in which she could display her unusual strength. She began her solo trapeze career in 1926.</div><div><br></div><div>Her remarkable work on the trapeze quickly drew attention, and she was featured in some of the world’s most prestigious circuses and variety theaters, from the legendary Wintergarten and Scala in Berlin to the Roxy, New York’s premier movie palace, and a four-year contract with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus from 1928 through 1933. There, she occupied a center-ring position in a program that was particularly rich in stellar aerialists: It included Winnie Colleano on the swinging trapeze, the Codonas and the Siegrist-Silbons on the flying trapeze, and the undisputed star of the show, Lillian Leitzel, on the Roman rings.</div></div><div><br></div><div>Luisita’s act included a neck-hang on the trapeze bar while doing a “side leg scale” (a vertical split holding one leg up), a one-arm <i>planche</i>, and a spectacular series of back rotations around the trapeze bar. The most she did in performance was 139 rotations, but she said she was able to perform up to 180 without feeling any major stress. When she appeared for the first time at Paris’s legendary Cirque Medrano in March 1935, the Paris correspondent of <i>Variety</i>, the top American trade paper, described her thus:</div><div><blockquote>“Luisita Leers stops the show at Medrano this fortnight; [she] is not only a remarkable performer, from a purely acrobatic viewpoint, but has one of those smiles that knocks ‘em over and a body that remains beautiful in spite of its extraordinary muscles. She works high without a net. Muscular control is so perfect that her stuff looks easy, but when she hangs by the back of her neck, apparently just as easily as she did her simpler introductory turns, the audience realizes there was something to it all along.”</blockquote></div><div>Luisita continued working intermittently in the U.S until 1936. She appeared in other circus shows and in vaudeville, and then returned permanently to Germany, just as the Nazis, paving the way for World War II, had seized power. When the war broke out, she found herself trapped in her own country. She was eventually unable to work (or train, for that matter), and to make matters worse, her family house was destroyed during the Allies’ bombing, along with her props and costumes.</div><div><br></div><div>When the war ended, Luisita was thirty-six. Out of shape and without equipment or money, she was unable to resume her career. She settled in Braunschweig, in Lower Saxony, where she met her husband, Gerhard Glage (whom she married on August 30, 1952), found employment as a translator, and eventually created her own translating agency. An artist to the end, she also took an interest in sculpture, for which she showed an evident talent. She passed away in 1997, at age eighty-eight.</div><div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvPJ26CCWE6kxejjyYvMmuOUsT2n7jHiqKNGnUwy2r8Swgj-gY7Q4AxQxVjxDnJ54lpgIn8cFFDtzcFTcS14mu_vzihF_96lji3gbTVEsEEp5TteE2JZrCvOKOPkOsTF8a38_fDMbU4zxsF_Gz_MGGjVvgC-tCc-K7v-I4eDUWIJpSDf4vvBMkeJGXlzM/s1200/luisita-leers-1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="851" data-original-width="1200" height="454" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvPJ26CCWE6kxejjyYvMmuOUsT2n7jHiqKNGnUwy2r8Swgj-gY7Q4AxQxVjxDnJ54lpgIn8cFFDtzcFTcS14mu_vzihF_96lji3gbTVEsEEp5TteE2JZrCvOKOPkOsTF8a38_fDMbU4zxsF_Gz_MGGjVvgC-tCc-K7v-I4eDUWIJpSDf4vvBMkeJGXlzM/w640-h454/luisita-leers-1.jpg" width="640"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaKQRqGCiHay-ZwaHyNTUGh9hnFQpA90JGGziHhWNyHDyF6KD_nn0Lud6VDCmKCo-yrH64km5i1qOZ1LG7KfnLnyWpRpZpVwTdMz281HcLGbbALRDOSiRqj5aGCa1lSYCBEFgnndUlHHENY6w62XgqfJhbsINJ1DIqXHONRBhj-1qhZfJyIf6FwjqEhI4/s1200/luisita-leers-2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="848" data-original-width="1200" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaKQRqGCiHay-ZwaHyNTUGh9hnFQpA90JGGziHhWNyHDyF6KD_nn0Lud6VDCmKCo-yrH64km5i1qOZ1LG7KfnLnyWpRpZpVwTdMz281HcLGbbALRDOSiRqj5aGCa1lSYCBEFgnndUlHHENY6w62XgqfJhbsINJ1DIqXHONRBhj-1qhZfJyIf6FwjqEhI4/w640-h452/luisita-leers-2.jpg" width="640"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_TA98FgOXjSUVC6IGfeqiS7ICmUzz-ILUtIKY_xlVimkso7vShxqxfpGNFIDfOjNpuzitDL19dWL_5oNXLs9PgNuMEo66DyjJIbdEVi0BV2P4B2bkC138Bkj1QEl4It6NkWINWUe7HWMp4Cq_YxGOs5rZnBKec4SLxXRa8H6h1N8H9TEJ5r6-VozNqBc/s703/luisita-leers-3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="703" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_TA98FgOXjSUVC6IGfeqiS7ICmUzz-ILUtIKY_xlVimkso7vShxqxfpGNFIDfOjNpuzitDL19dWL_5oNXLs9PgNuMEo66DyjJIbdEVi0BV2P4B2bkC138Bkj1QEl4It6NkWINWUe7HWMp4Cq_YxGOs5rZnBKec4SLxXRa8H6h1N8H9TEJ5r6-VozNqBc/s16000/luisita-leers-3.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrk7Ki7ieZ0wp9SQrM6RXi8VqrNDbLP-WDVCXWeTgtPuCfNWoi68bjom4Rdli-komnSPaV8nG0xVZ7w7-gIn11jmQ0Dj91Ycdwq4vwSsJoWfE8QwCfEUXdrIJjorLLR-74bH48s6XLcq8fyqYlx3obQpAwPlvR6X4FU0cpCyrSaZ1OqDs_AKpDlL8Ueak/s707/luisita-leers-4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="707" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrk7Ki7ieZ0wp9SQrM6RXi8VqrNDbLP-WDVCXWeTgtPuCfNWoi68bjom4Rdli-komnSPaV8nG0xVZ7w7-gIn11jmQ0Dj91Ycdwq4vwSsJoWfE8QwCfEUXdrIJjorLLR-74bH48s6XLcq8fyqYlx3obQpAwPlvR6X4FU0cpCyrSaZ1OqDs_AKpDlL8Ueak/s16000/luisita-leers-4.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitQjvjZyk2oEISuz2cYrPh4NKXR98M2YNaNuxBNX0XYhKVzlFACokI5f1bqivtPg7zdMcnsMa-txABByqGGv-FIMOfKJNpIIN5FfO6YqqPIO_Hn-lcpKIqQvR_yBA4xV2K_1e4mCSLK3C2OpGFShAsbjFymtMFQ120QQAeHDbfOwhcVhj1oNJkhIrIV2w/s706/luisita-leers-5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="706" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitQjvjZyk2oEISuz2cYrPh4NKXR98M2YNaNuxBNX0XYhKVzlFACokI5f1bqivtPg7zdMcnsMa-txABByqGGv-FIMOfKJNpIIN5FfO6YqqPIO_Hn-lcpKIqQvR_yBA4xV2K_1e4mCSLK3C2OpGFShAsbjFymtMFQ120QQAeHDbfOwhcVhj1oNJkhIrIV2w/s16000/luisita-leers-5.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span></span></div><a href="http://www.vintag.es/2024/03/luisita-leers.html#more">See more »</a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6424637093648521725.post-50546932951607962762024-03-15T15:56:00.000+07:002024-03-15T15:56:58.275+07:0035 Gorgeous Photos of French Actress Juliette Mayniel in the 1960sBorn 1936 in Saint Hippolyte, French actress Juliette Mayniel had her film debut in <i>Les Cousins</i>. However, by the mid-to-late 1960s, the tumultuous cultural and political happenings were changing family life.<div><br></div><div>Family life in the 1960s was shaped by the times. It was a decade of war, rebellion, drugs, sex, peace, love, and rock-and-roll. These years brought considerable advances in women's rights, civil rights, and space travel.</div><div><br></div><div>Still, the ’60s also saw the Vietnam war, war protests, assassinations, and an ever-widening “generation gap” between parents and their more liberal offspring. During the first half of the 20th century, the best way to see someone use a hula hoop was to watch Chinese acrobats twirl multiple hoops on their arms, legs and torsos. Then, in 1958, Wham-O toy company founders Richard Knerr and Arthur “Spud” Melin saw the potential in the humble hoop and began to mass-market a 40-in. version made of colorful plastic tubing.</div><div><br></div><div>Thanks to a savvy marketing campaign, 25 million hoops were sold within a few months of the product's launch; the hula hoop craze was off and looping, with kids all over America spinning hoops around their hips and waists. Hula hooping teens became an iconic image of the 1950s, and the fad grew when Wham-O began manufacturing a smaller version of the hoop for the younger set. While the hula hoop never went away, it has had a bit of a revival in the past five years with popular hoop fitness classes. You can even hire a personal hula hoop trainer.</div><div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6kfxWMllwWfgEXbz0oSfAqh-Leb_ozexUlvxIqMRCF7u0ymNDaZ0Eft7tvc563E_hHv-cro-5Mrr3M1XBY-5PvzbSRdtF8icxhbZ3GjYIS_Je8Us3I8-GinL51D49FjLpqO7S1NqPHEhFKYYQiX8zqPOu7fVM04jOUzETDIflJKatyjL69eCKZw37vOQ/s1200/hula-hoop-1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="925" data-original-width="1200" height="494" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6kfxWMllwWfgEXbz0oSfAqh-Leb_ozexUlvxIqMRCF7u0ymNDaZ0Eft7tvc563E_hHv-cro-5Mrr3M1XBY-5PvzbSRdtF8icxhbZ3GjYIS_Je8Us3I8-GinL51D49FjLpqO7S1NqPHEhFKYYQiX8zqPOu7fVM04jOUzETDIflJKatyjL69eCKZw37vOQ/w640-h494/hula-hoop-1.jpg" width="640"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi68-QNCf1qDIldsb4KINWfEWnAVRihK5Ak-oD_nxxvbkoTT6GSXCj8b8fEkW7_-WOUYeCQ-sSUUAID7YBF_Kjn2sah5KNsrDz1-EzTGzE4TYUlB4cT_2m6GsBxQ5oB1HF2hq0mqSOVZl7u_XMCk5ifeymhpKq1n7_zas5I4nEEr1EBW8NuUFDOVJG8c4U/s1200/hula-hoop-2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="675" data-original-width="1200" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi68-QNCf1qDIldsb4KINWfEWnAVRihK5Ak-oD_nxxvbkoTT6GSXCj8b8fEkW7_-WOUYeCQ-sSUUAID7YBF_Kjn2sah5KNsrDz1-EzTGzE4TYUlB4cT_2m6GsBxQ5oB1HF2hq0mqSOVZl7u_XMCk5ifeymhpKq1n7_zas5I4nEEr1EBW8NuUFDOVJG8c4U/w640-h360/hula-hoop-2.jpg" width="640"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiNqAtPrhCIeJcUFydXo9utoJ9UN_w2lcwzNqDNqLlKZ1g8uQuqxNeC0FU2IqJVTyYNIjjGRzyMfYoMEKeQ-wbJibGKYWYb1ta63QlnYmXI_Lh3KgFXpvHr0pycMB8D2_a4OTAF9YgVPyxcqldxMl2waisJEGmcwvQS9AcSy1iz_lR7IrX9GIN90ZF4vk/s1200/hula-hoop-3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="804" data-original-width="1200" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiNqAtPrhCIeJcUFydXo9utoJ9UN_w2lcwzNqDNqLlKZ1g8uQuqxNeC0FU2IqJVTyYNIjjGRzyMfYoMEKeQ-wbJibGKYWYb1ta63QlnYmXI_Lh3KgFXpvHr0pycMB8D2_a4OTAF9YgVPyxcqldxMl2waisJEGmcwvQS9AcSy1iz_lR7IrX9GIN90ZF4vk/w640-h428/hula-hoop-3.jpg" width="640"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSC8x3Y_LQq97656MtOCRsbj6Vy9-whdpMF1DR6lD3ztrKXQhStHC6S8H8G50vCZIjUG2beLyypfD-6VImTgXIXKn3D7vAuUCmfQy2rqliKzQXT3UUcfLqv2KxK0-w4AiTkYUbicYSowkL-yMwLyge8eXug0vNIdm6HYUQXqkm5SCgN6eeVB2w1AlZD9s/s1200/hula-hoop-4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="850" data-original-width="1200" height="454" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSC8x3Y_LQq97656MtOCRsbj6Vy9-whdpMF1DR6lD3ztrKXQhStHC6S8H8G50vCZIjUG2beLyypfD-6VImTgXIXKn3D7vAuUCmfQy2rqliKzQXT3UUcfLqv2KxK0-w4AiTkYUbicYSowkL-yMwLyge8eXug0vNIdm6HYUQXqkm5SCgN6eeVB2w1AlZD9s/w640-h454/hula-hoop-4.jpg" width="640"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJg5MdvcxNPI8UxhGg1MpV8r-ekEIzhfxOT77ms0LLzyZwszOYya46zZTNOojdv583EcU2ffBBXKMvrw3YguB0gJnqaT-UxngKdHcZx3eU35xyc7xOJKIaxIX8tBfeQhVXjJx3IKnYFDfOJbXtUq5igOZ8UrfeYv2ZTZ2bDjY9v4xZv_ksxDGmTj-S9ZM/s1200/hula-hoop-5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="797" data-original-width="1200" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJg5MdvcxNPI8UxhGg1MpV8r-ekEIzhfxOT77ms0LLzyZwszOYya46zZTNOojdv583EcU2ffBBXKMvrw3YguB0gJnqaT-UxngKdHcZx3eU35xyc7xOJKIaxIX8tBfeQhVXjJx3IKnYFDfOJbXtUq5igOZ8UrfeYv2ZTZ2bDjY9v4xZv_ksxDGmTj-S9ZM/w640-h426/hula-hoop-5.jpg" width="640"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span></span></div><a href="http://www.vintag.es/2024/03/hula-hoop.html#more">See more »</a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6424637093648521725.post-13219825803914715612024-03-14T17:14:00.000+07:002024-03-14T17:14:21.768+07:00Fascinating Photos Capture Street Scenes of Bangkok in the Early 1970sBangkok is the capital and most populous city of Thailand. The city occupies 1,568.7 square kilometers (605.7 sq mi) in the Chao Phraya River delta in central Thailand. Bangkok is an extreme primate city, dwarfing Thailand’s other urban centers in both size and importance to the national economy.<div><br></div><div>The city is an international hub for transport and health care, and has emerged as a centre for the arts, fashion, and entertainment. It is known for its street life and cultural landmarks, as well as its red-light districts. The Grand Palace and Buddhist temples including Wat Arun and Wat Pho stand in contrast with other tourist attractions such as the nightlife scenes of Khaosan Road and Patpong.</div><div><br></div><div>Bangkok is among the world’s top tourist destinations, and has been named the world’s most visited city consistently in several international rankings. These fascinating photos were taken by <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/dboo/">Nick DeWolf</a> that show street scenes of Bangkok in 1972.</div><div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVUVc8pL_yIeh9eeiirQqQm0YEId2nfDn6ZJvWE30n3c9BeXDhDWeNxu4jx9jpooI1322T9d0b9HEqI7isFkOOqioV7JaPiXpjxp8E2HVI-DGu_FbhKcmkDGkJKmX7SYXvKgBusbtXK-Yc0xNNqxmHlP3vfieI6ryYR-GAGxm7YKQloCXMUEyTKmX162tE/s800/bangkok-1970s-1.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="534" data-original-width="800" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVUVc8pL_yIeh9eeiirQqQm0YEId2nfDn6ZJvWE30n3c9BeXDhDWeNxu4jx9jpooI1322T9d0b9HEqI7isFkOOqioV7JaPiXpjxp8E2HVI-DGu_FbhKcmkDGkJKmX7SYXvKgBusbtXK-Yc0xNNqxmHlP3vfieI6ryYR-GAGxm7YKQloCXMUEyTKmX162tE/w640-h428/bangkok-1970s-1.jpeg" width="640"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimjFdIkZQkS8V70f0j65k7t1zAoUElUfdCOouEDxRZ2vtfdAArSnKRtHzOez7LJ0v3AE7awjOzkpow1GhNn-aYCnYO6KTJYYEiYtL5aCL9Wxo_L17l77jk-eUSesDtNIl_3mv3YULfysFnXErtVemg9OyYucLMxVNLI0vIq8SmUTkT20RUtHar3DrQy06V/s800/bangkok-1970s-2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="534" data-original-width="800" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimjFdIkZQkS8V70f0j65k7t1zAoUElUfdCOouEDxRZ2vtfdAArSnKRtHzOez7LJ0v3AE7awjOzkpow1GhNn-aYCnYO6KTJYYEiYtL5aCL9Wxo_L17l77jk-eUSesDtNIl_3mv3YULfysFnXErtVemg9OyYucLMxVNLI0vIq8SmUTkT20RUtHar3DrQy06V/w640-h428/bangkok-1970s-2.jpeg" width="640"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZhtx3au_SGw-tjOKC1Xr0l5uxX014TenixVQLVoF8lJ3B4E0hEcv2uWsFOQ-LiwykK7gIG1Sk-1ecyYKZUBmhCpYdFHAbHVK8DX2-TnZemph7FRBvy6_MLf-oJP61E3zKca397mt-SGSstV3h518iegQH03Dz3sB67rjyaLKK7Wb-Qmd23Tk_N9FbNf12/s800/bangkok-1970s-3.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="534" data-original-width="800" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZhtx3au_SGw-tjOKC1Xr0l5uxX014TenixVQLVoF8lJ3B4E0hEcv2uWsFOQ-LiwykK7gIG1Sk-1ecyYKZUBmhCpYdFHAbHVK8DX2-TnZemph7FRBvy6_MLf-oJP61E3zKca397mt-SGSstV3h518iegQH03Dz3sB67rjyaLKK7Wb-Qmd23Tk_N9FbNf12/w640-h428/bangkok-1970s-3.jpeg" width="640"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMs1R49B0SnqLcDfTxpACbogVsIZJRSkQaD0i0C49ItNyICVBbeKYo-1BTdTQVqQmfiMMwWXVJ07CY98Fs71dz3my2w2vjbQThwut8fWZoACi7WhFaEITN3aCWMOWe9zi_2HEVRMgGJd-clzKCmKmV4db2SELlXOuxo5CWzFCXnFW3W_pTHvW7XfP4hY5b/s800/bangkok-1970s-4.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="534" data-original-width="800" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMs1R49B0SnqLcDfTxpACbogVsIZJRSkQaD0i0C49ItNyICVBbeKYo-1BTdTQVqQmfiMMwWXVJ07CY98Fs71dz3my2w2vjbQThwut8fWZoACi7WhFaEITN3aCWMOWe9zi_2HEVRMgGJd-clzKCmKmV4db2SELlXOuxo5CWzFCXnFW3W_pTHvW7XfP4hY5b/w640-h428/bangkok-1970s-4.jpeg" width="640"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi7uc5T94PBbJH-nxwyQq1hcLQeh47WMWlLOwi4QoLurJ8jVlrhRiPG4EVQW3m-1Bp9sIR985aTLIYA3-w778VCWKs7-zVTpX6cMn8MDaCaqiB24QktV8uOvJkSvmcBP0PCWE4uFT80mV_9-S0bLQ8ia8pOVlkBEMJXO8bm5E8jWSdcxxH08qUkxcsCP7Z/s800/bangkok-1970s-5.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="534" data-original-width="800" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi7uc5T94PBbJH-nxwyQq1hcLQeh47WMWlLOwi4QoLurJ8jVlrhRiPG4EVQW3m-1Bp9sIR985aTLIYA3-w778VCWKs7-zVTpX6cMn8MDaCaqiB24QktV8uOvJkSvmcBP0PCWE4uFT80mV_9-S0bLQ8ia8pOVlkBEMJXO8bm5E8jWSdcxxH08qUkxcsCP7Z/w640-h428/bangkok-1970s-5.jpeg" width="640"></a></div><br><span></span><a href="http://www.vintag.es/2024/03/bangkok-1972.html#more">See more »</a>Quynh Nguyenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16274121998354621123noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6424637093648521725.post-2166968774171595302024-03-14T13:48:00.001+07:002024-03-14T13:48:30.541+07:0020 Vintage Portraits of a Young and Handsome Michael Caine From the 1960sMichael Caine’s film characters, such as Alfie and Harry Palmer, as well as his distinctive looks, working-class background and glamorous lifestyle, made him the model of male cool in the 1960s. This celebration of his style presents a portfolio of photographs of the actor during the period, including portraits, film stills and candid pictures, on and off set. A brief introduction and captions set the scene and identify celebrity co-stars and companions, including Natalie Wood, Terence Stamp and Mia Farrow.<div><br></div><div>Caine appeared in more than 100 films, and his amiable Cockney persona was usually present in each performance. The former Maurice Micklewhite took his screen name from the 1954 film <i>The Caine Mutiny</i>. He began acting on stage in 1953 and entered motion pictures in 1956. He played a variety of roles in such British productions as <i>A Hill in Korea</i> (1956), <i>How to Murder a Rich Uncle</i> (1957), <i>The Day the Earth Caught Fire</i> (1961), and <i>Zulu</i> (1964).</div><div><br></div><div>Success came with <i>The Ipcress File</i> (1965)—the first of five films in which Caine portrayed British spy Harry Palmer—but his real breakthrough was in the title role of <i>Alfie</i> (1966), for which he received an Academy Award nomination as best actor. His other successful films of the 1960s included <i>Funeral in Berlin</i> (1966), <i>Gambit</i> (1966), <i>The Wrong Box</i> (1966), <i>Hurry Sundown</i> (1967), and <i>The Italian Job</i> (1969).</div><div><br></div><div>In these early films, Caine established himself as a versatile actor whose everyman qualities were well suited to a variety of roles. His cool urbanity was perhaps the only constant among performances that included cynical secret agents, gregarious playboys, rugged adventurers, refined gentlemen, humble schoolteachers, and psychotic killers. His star quality was not sacrificed for such versatility, and he retained his affable Cockney persona in most roles. He was especially deft at light comedy and usually managed to reveal subtly humorous elements within a given screenplay.</div><div><br></div><div>Here’s a collection of 20 vintage portraits of a young Michael Caine from the 1960s:<br><div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh50YyQ8FRhDdhyphenhyphenfQLNCgmYYAlI4o1zGU1nIwCZRN8fD-Ul2YcbQ8rhFwdtFK8fn4KBIKSz73ne5OrKQ2YYq5J_X7scJWOvM3ecD-hDmcW8LRM4ISDI1rIwJydxiUN9oKBkMazUq95YdPSwk8WTA3Ufowuy18y69rFOE1ED4H-r20ZOOP_3w-39sFp4xRE/s1200/michael-caine-1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="966" data-original-width="1200" height="516" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh50YyQ8FRhDdhyphenhyphenfQLNCgmYYAlI4o1zGU1nIwCZRN8fD-Ul2YcbQ8rhFwdtFK8fn4KBIKSz73ne5OrKQ2YYq5J_X7scJWOvM3ecD-hDmcW8LRM4ISDI1rIwJydxiUN9oKBkMazUq95YdPSwk8WTA3Ufowuy18y69rFOE1ED4H-r20ZOOP_3w-39sFp4xRE/w640-h516/michael-caine-1.jpg" width="640"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1mW0NtmIgFF58F9ZMHc08HdOWy8vtWt3gV8RTcEq6NYkyMeETCExbyMPNYt8mr2Nqd4llD9IyPEvvLeg6UOaQxzuKMvt1SqpmtyVzUeQj-svWan3zpXhxCJcRq_obKgxD-CQ3MI0PTK_kE5ikKXagIvX75OLJ7gNJMnHXqrIbnTJKZTy3LL0CKOX2R9w/s1200/michael-caine-2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="795" data-original-width="1200" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1mW0NtmIgFF58F9ZMHc08HdOWy8vtWt3gV8RTcEq6NYkyMeETCExbyMPNYt8mr2Nqd4llD9IyPEvvLeg6UOaQxzuKMvt1SqpmtyVzUeQj-svWan3zpXhxCJcRq_obKgxD-CQ3MI0PTK_kE5ikKXagIvX75OLJ7gNJMnHXqrIbnTJKZTy3LL0CKOX2R9w/w640-h424/michael-caine-2.jpg" width="640"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDhodN7zsuwRgei2dUPvXRwGDwbO6mXbwPTkK5VKZ7zh232ASl1ycCNsE7vkMBH1Kp7FqN97GiUJt8NPLbZq14NYS_A6hO1PUwbDpwytsKXYQBNEn-lkbgmCXdb21-_MHLJIPbRHXZ3XrajTWKJIFfKP4lDMkFYL9CL8whJlda37IHFCRDP3ky141JiYs/s882/michael-caine-3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="882" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDhodN7zsuwRgei2dUPvXRwGDwbO6mXbwPTkK5VKZ7zh232ASl1ycCNsE7vkMBH1Kp7FqN97GiUJt8NPLbZq14NYS_A6hO1PUwbDpwytsKXYQBNEn-lkbgmCXdb21-_MHLJIPbRHXZ3XrajTWKJIFfKP4lDMkFYL9CL8whJlda37IHFCRDP3ky141JiYs/s16000/michael-caine-3.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKxWjQU3HP5Ovq8humlmcNsk5kdqn_4Mwpt7L_aKX1ndccL2XfIbw74pXRF-i-m7u0vlZ_en9MLQVI0yhKcLu9-Ndy4twvVom-JOYsiddutUuQlIYERtW-GohipOGPCifIEzWK8fxKw5HVXYFLsgsBsEAXvaL9T298162pTGlZucYYvRIC6qw0OsVfQhY/s803/michael-caine-4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="803" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKxWjQU3HP5Ovq8humlmcNsk5kdqn_4Mwpt7L_aKX1ndccL2XfIbw74pXRF-i-m7u0vlZ_en9MLQVI0yhKcLu9-Ndy4twvVom-JOYsiddutUuQlIYERtW-GohipOGPCifIEzWK8fxKw5HVXYFLsgsBsEAXvaL9T298162pTGlZucYYvRIC6qw0OsVfQhY/s16000/michael-caine-4.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAT-utdzrnPKZ5rQhpZLi9uw2Hz8LeAKErf88FnT6_MJbKUv8vEAEEC-IkhkDPSbJt9swdHmtE4gbfqJ6Hi-LHz6T__HtbGyvbHPK2WJSJOCG5CR92sxeUPr8LZql61Nh1Bene4myAWe2NhfnfISzp78Z55RoDwBAcOba1E-zLadScBg6EVfjd2YiAsd0/s837/michael-caine-5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="837" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAT-utdzrnPKZ5rQhpZLi9uw2Hz8LeAKErf88FnT6_MJbKUv8vEAEEC-IkhkDPSbJt9swdHmtE4gbfqJ6Hi-LHz6T__HtbGyvbHPK2WJSJOCG5CR92sxeUPr8LZql61Nh1Bene4myAWe2NhfnfISzp78Z55RoDwBAcOba1E-zLadScBg6EVfjd2YiAsd0/s16000/michael-caine-5.jpg"></a></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span></span></div></div><a href="http://www.vintag.es/2024/03/young-michael-caine.html#more">See more »</a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6424637093648521725.post-40762742307982634212024-03-14T07:26:00.000+07:002024-03-14T07:26:00.018+07:00Joseph Binder: One of the Pioneers of the Modern PosterBorn 1898 in Vienna, Austrian graphic designer and painter Joseph Binder established his own studio, Wiener Graphik, in Vienna in 1924. His designs were also celebrated in the leading German design publication <i>Gebrauchsgraphik</i>. Natural images portrayed through geometric forms and flat colors were defining characteristics of the work he created during his Viennese period.<div><br></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjh44ne0Bt0JSJawtRwFI0w0hAALtSV_LWTGh_W4IbGFTV_6qzFWYLZZqWLq55SOY_fw77SLwq3_0ew3JCfs5x8vb7jErjXAxOyH63NfXY4rMIJ5hZvmTqEMqXtkDeJ-WauEGhA7IZ5c2Ci0sz8gehHmc0K5MkUyNjIdPvT5kCtitoyxj_1xj7UIMP0Dbn/s1100/joseph-binder.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="560" data-original-width="1100" height="326" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjh44ne0Bt0JSJawtRwFI0w0hAALtSV_LWTGh_W4IbGFTV_6qzFWYLZZqWLq55SOY_fw77SLwq3_0ew3JCfs5x8vb7jErjXAxOyH63NfXY4rMIJ5hZvmTqEMqXtkDeJ-WauEGhA7IZ5c2Ci0sz8gehHmc0K5MkUyNjIdPvT5kCtitoyxj_1xj7UIMP0Dbn/w640-h326/joseph-binder.jpeg" width="640"></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;">Posters designed by Joseph Binder</span></td></tr></tbody></table><div><br></div><div>In the early 1930s, Binder increasingly set his sights on the United States after he was invited to lecture at the Chicago Art Institute and the Minneapolis School of Art. Throughout the 1930s, Binder’s international reputation continued to grow, fueled by the presence of his posters in exhibitions from New York to Tokyo. In 1938, he officially closed his Vienna studio two years after moving to the United States.</div><div><br></div><div>Binder was noted for his refined, stylized images and high-impact colors.
